Your next iPhone might be able to protect itself from thieves

Your next iPhone might be able to protect itself from thieves Apple is considering ways to empower the iPhone with active protections after being stolen, according to a new patent application. What if your iPhone could help actively protect itself, even after it's been stolen? That potential idea was considered in a new patent application Apple filed Thursday with the US Patent & Trademark Office.  According to the application, which AppleInsider wrote about, a future iPhone may -- when triggered by the right circumstances -- start documenting an alleged thief's fingerprints through the Touch ID home button, picture and videos from the cameras and even voice from the microphone. Such capabilities, while perhaps legally questionable, could go much further than Apple's current lock screen and Find My iPhone app. An Apple representative didn't respond to a request for comment. Apple releases "important security update" for iPhone after spyware discovery

Apple releases "important security update" for iPhone after spyware discovery Apple has released a security fix for iPhones and iPads following the discovery of malware targeting the platform that was found circulating in the Middle East. The iPhone and iPad maker released the patch, iOS 9.3.5, on Thursday, calling it an "important security update." The patches fix three vulnerabilities, dubbed "Trident" by security firm Lookout , which could be used to access the device's location, read contacts, texts, calls, and emails, as well as turn on the device's microphone.  The company said that spyware that exploited the vulnerabilities were developed by an Israel-based company specializing in zero-day exploits. Citizen Lab explained in a blog post that they had uncovered an operation by the security services of the United Arab Emirates to try to get into the iPhone of a renowned human rights defender, Ahmed Mansoor. ...

WD My Passport Wireless Pro review: A portable hard drive made for mobile streaming

WD My Passport Wireless Pro review: A portable hard drive made for mobile streaming With an integrated Wi-Fi hot spot and the Plex media server, this drive lets you take all your shows (and all your tunes) on the road. We had only two real complaints about WD’s original My Passport Wireless  media-streaming Wi-Fi hard drive: short-ish battery life, and an inability to charge other devices. WD has remedied both shortcomings with the all-new My Passport Wireless Pro. This is a thoroughly improved and much more capable product.  Design and features If you’re new to wireless media-streaming hard drives, they’re basically a marriage of Wi-Fi hot spot and battery-powered USB storage. In this case, you get a dual-band 802.11ac hot spot and either 2TB ($230) or 3TB ($250) of storage. Log onto the hot spot the My Passport Pro creates and you can stream music, video, or photographs from it to your laptop, tablet, or smartphone. You can also use it for like ...

Microsoft's Word Flow Keyboard Gets Built-in Search

Microsoft's Word Flow Keyboard Gets Built-in Search Watch out, Google Gboard: Microsoft's keyboard app is getting a built-in search feature as well. Redmond on Tuesday updated its Word Flow app with some handy new features, including the ability to search for GIFs, images, and emoji right from the keyboard via Bing. You can also now easily find contacts when you need to share someone's phone number and look up things like restaurants, news, videos, facts to help you win an argument, and the weather forecast right from the keyboard. Microsoft is, of course, aiming to compete with Google's recently released Gboard app , which lets you search and send information, emoji, and GIFs from your keyboard. Word Flow, meanwhile, also now offers GIF predictions, showing you icons you might want to include in your message as you type. Like other keyboard apps, it also now shows word suggestions as you write out your messages. First released in April, Wo...

Snapchat is bringing its real-time sports filters to high schools

Snapchat is bringing its real-time sports filters to high schools High school football is about to get a lot more Snapchat-friendly.  The photo app will soon debut a new type of geofilter that shows sports scores for local high school football games in real time. The filters, a result of a partnership between Snapchat and a Southern California startup called ScoreStream, will start to show up in Snapchat during high school football games on Sept. 2.  The filters are similar to the live score geofilters the company rolled out earlier this year for NBA games . During games at participating high schools — Snapchat won't say exactly how many schools will be a part of the effort but that it expects the filters to show up at more than 5,000 games each week — students can overlay scoreboard filters onto their photos.  Read More: Click here

In Sweden and Finland, tech companies help refugees find work

In Sweden and Finland, tech companies help refugees find work Safinaz Awad went through hell to get to Sweden. Last year, she -- along with her mother, sister, husband and infant son -- escaped Syria and the civil war there that's so far killed nearly half a million men, women and children. The five crammed into an overcrowded smuggler's boat for the treacherous crossing between Turkey and Greece across the Aegean Sea. Two days after reaching Greece, her mother and sister snuck onto a plane to Sweden, where they could live permanently if granted asylum. Awad and her husband, though, feared their baby would draw too much attention from the authorities. But to leave legally, they'd need official travel documents -- and the only way to get those was by registering for asylum in Greece. That's not something many refugees and migrants want to do because a European law called the Dublin Regulation can force asylum seekers to live in the first EU nation t...

Google wants you to log in once on Android - with any password manager

Google wants you to log in once on Android - with any password manager Google is backing the new OpenYOLO initiative to allow all password managers gain the autofill features that its own Smart Lock password manager offers on Android. Google is developing an open-source API to ease the hassle of logging-in to apps, particularly for those who use unique passwords for each of their accounts. The API, dubbed OpenYOLO -- short for 'you only log in once' -- will give developers a secure way to use passwords stored in password managers to help users log in to their apps. Dashlane will be the first password manager to support the open API, although it's hoped other popular password managers will join the cause to simplify authentication for Android apps. "Google is excited to support the launch of this project with Dashlane and help create a new open standard for app authentication," said Iain McGinniss, a Google software engineer who he...

Windows 10 moves closer to smart-home centerpiece with big Internet of Things deal

Windows 10 moves closer to smart-home centerpiece with big Internet of Things deal The Thread Group and Open Connectivity Foundation join forces to make it easier for smart home devices to connect  A display for the newly formed Open Connectivity Foundation at Mobile World Congress 2016 shows a model smart home, in a file image captured on Feb. 25, 2016. Credit: Stephen Lawson    Lazy people will love Windows 10 and its ability to automate home tasks, and the operating system's smart-home credentials are getting a serious boost with a recent internet of things pact. Microsoft wants to put Windows 10 at the center of smart homes. The company wants users to be able to tell the operating system's Cortana voice assistant to switch on a light, open a door, release food for a cat, and even check the contents of a refrigerator. For Windows 10 to be successful, the OS will hav...

Iran is First Country to Ban Pokemon Go

Iran is First Country to Ban Pokemon Go Though the country has officially banned Pokemon Go, we wonder what will happen if eager gamers find some way to grab the installation file anyway... Good luck trying to catch 'em all in Iran. The country's High Council of Virtual Spaces has officially banned the Pokemon Go app, making Iran the first country to do so. As for why, High Council of Virtual Spaces wasn't very specific. The BBC reported that the High Council claimed the game caused "security concerns," but it neglected to elaborate on what those were. We have our guesses, though. Pokemon Go can encourage players to get creative with their sleuthing at all hours of the night, which can prove troublesome. Trespassing concerns are prevalent, too—so much so, there's even a class-action lawsuit in the works in the United States centered on that very issue. Read More : Click here

6 phones with the best battery life

6 phones with the best battery life The last thing you want is for your phone to run out of juice when you need it most. Usually, a phone lasts a full work day with moderate use. But if you use it heavily, you'll need to recharge it more often. Batteries also lose steam over time, running down faster the longer you've owned it. The specter of losing battery -- and therefore losing your communication hub -- is frightening and real. If you feel your handset battery seems to be stuck in the '90s and doesn't last as long as you'd like, you're not alone. So if long-life battery tops your list of smartphone needs, check out these top-scorers in CNET's continuous video tests. Samsung Galaxy S7 Active (and S7 Edge and S7) We know we said this list includes five phones, but really it's eight. Dominating our roundup with the top three longest lab results is Samsung's entire Galaxy S7 family. That includes the recent Galaxy S7 Acti...

JBL Boost TV review

JBL Boost TV review:  The Good The JBL Boost TV is simple to set up and gives you better sound than almost any television. The unit is compact and includes the most-used connections. The speaker sounds better than many portable Bluetooth speakers at the same price. The Bad The Boost can sound shouty at high volume or with bright music. There's little stereo separation. You can buy a full sound bar and subwoofer system with streaming features for the same money. The Bottom Line The JBL Boost TV offers a simple, effective upgrade to your existing television sound with the option of Bluetooth streaming thrown in. As TV screens have gotten thinner, their speakers have shrunken accordingly. That often makes for audio that can sound less robust than some of the old tube TVs of yore. But there is something you can do about it. While home theater in a box systems and sound bars have...

4 ways to repurpose your tablet

4 ways to repurpose your tablet Do you have an old tablet lying around? Or are you ready to upgrade but feel bad ditching your old one? You could make good use of it by repurposing it into something else. Here are a few easy ideas for turning your old tablet into something new -- kind of. And in you're in the cleaning mood, or want to be, check out the KonTechie Method , which helps you clear your tech clutter by using one simple question. Security camera Tablets aren't known for their camera quality (they tend to take grainy, washed out photos) and though that doesn't bode well for your vacation photo and flattering selfies, it'll do for a security camera. By using this How To , you can turn your tablet into a security camera. (It's directed at smartphones, however the same rules apply to tablets.) It takes some initial set-up, but once it's up and running, all you have to do is pick the perfect location to place your tablet and su...

The Unrivaled Riva!

The Unrivaled Riva! Being an audiophile is expensive. You need a bank of high-quality audio, vinyls, and state-of-the-art gear, which I can assure you will set you back by a hefty sum. In most cases high-end audio equipment is priced a certain way because of its brand. You’ll recall the same sort of strategy used by watch-making brands in the DWISS M2 article on YD not too long ago.  Riva S plans to be the robin-hood for the audiophiles of the world. Well, not literally, but it gives you an incredible amount of sonic power for an even more incredibly reasonable price… The Riva S’s portable design puts it on a pedestal compared to even consolidated home-audio solutions, and its technical prowess ensures you won’t find a portable Bluetooth speaker even half as powerful. In its bread-loaf sized body, it manages to squeeze in 3 full range audio drivers along with 4 dual-piston bass radiators. If that wasn’t enough, it even comes with a 30 watt amplifier with 3 ...
