Samsung's Gear 360 camera now available in Australia

It looks like an eyeball on three legs, and it is now yours to own. On Tuesday, Samsung launched its new camera, Samsung Gear 360, in Australia. The device, which is able to capture 360-degree video and images, has a retail price of A$499. While the camera has been available in South Korea and Singapore since April, it still has only a  limited release in the U.S., making this a rare opportunity for Australians to get their hands on something their American friends cannot. The camera uses two fisheye lenses, both with 15-megapixel image sensors, to capture 360-degree video that can then be experienced using the Samsung Gear virtual reality headset. Footage can be previewed in real-time on a number of Samsung smartphones, including the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6. While there are an increasing number of virtual reality headsets on the market, including the Oculus Rift and H...

Uber Moving To Upfront Fares For Standard Rides

Is Uber dropping the concept of surge pricing? Fat chance. However, Uber is taking steps to make surge pricing less glaring within its mobile apps. You'll still be paying the same, high amount if you're trying to find an Uber during periods of high demand, but you might be more willing to take one if you just see a simple rate for the ride in Uber's app. At least, we presume that's the real reason why Uber is now switching to "guaranteed fares" within its mobile apps. You'll still get a warning that said fare is higher "due to increased demand" if surge pricing applies. You'll just get one number, though, not a big, scary multiplier boosting the normal cost of your trip. "We moved to upfront, per trip fares—just like airlines and hotels—two years ago when we launched uberPOOL. Riders needed to enter their destinations so we could match them with other people headed the same way. This allowed us to calculate the...

BitTorrent Sync Now a Separate, Enterprise-Focused Biz

BitTorrent's 3-year-old Sync service is leaving the nest and changing its name. Going forward, Sync will be an enterprise-focused product known as Resilio Connect , operating separately from BitTorrent. When it launched in 2013 , Sync was seen as a Dropbox competitor, allowing users to synchronize personal files across multiple devices. After operating in tandem for a few years, BitTorrent co-CEO Robert Delamar said in a Thursday statement that "the company would be much stronger, and would unlock tremendous shareholder value, if we were to split the company into distinct consumer media and enterprise businesses." Former BitTorrent CEO Eric Klinker will be in charge of Resilio because it's "the business that he [knows] best: B2B," Delamar wrote. "Jeremy and I are likewise doing the same in the consumer media space." Source: pcmag

How to run Android Apps on your Chromebook

For now, there's only one Chromebook that will do it, the ASUS Chromebook Flip, but soon most newer models Chromebooks will be able to run most of the 1.5 million Android apps. The ASUS Chromebook Flip, the first Chromebook that can run Android apps, is here. Others such as the 2015 Chromebook Pixel and the Acer Chromebook R11 will soon be able to run them as well. To run Android apps on Chromebooks, for now, you'll need take the following steps. First, you need to switch your Chromebook to the developer channel. This will give your Chromebook the latest, bleeding edge release of ChromeOS. Be warned: These releases are unstable.  In addition, once you switch to the dev channel, if you go back to the stable channel, your solid-state or hard drive will be erased. Finally, while you can move up to the ChromeOS release that supports Android apps, ChromeOS 53.0.2768.0, your Chromebook will still not run the apps until Google activates the functionality fo...

What happens to those free Windows 10 upgrades after July 29, 2016?

We're nearing the end of Microsoft's unprecedented free upgrade offer for Windows 10. The offer officially expires July 29, 2016, on the one-year anniversary of the operating system's initial release. But what happens then?  Microsoft's ambitious plan to get Windows 10 running on a billion devices within the next few years depends to a large extent on the success of its free upgrade offer. When the company first announced the terms of that offer in May 2015, it literally included an asterisk and fine print. Those terms have changed slightly over the intervening months, but one element has remained constant: The offer is good for one year after the availability of Windows 10. Here's the actual wording of the offer, as it appears today: Get the best Windows experience. Ever. Ready for Windows 10? Qualified Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 devices can upgrade for free. Offer ends July 29, 2016. The text that appears in the fine print at the bottom...

Say hello to the world's first 1,000-core chip that runs off an AA battery

Say hello to the world's first 1,000-core chip that runs off an AA battery Defense Department-funded researchers at the University of California, Davis, and IBM have built a 1,000-processor chip that they say is the most energy-efficient many-core processor ever built. A team of researchers at the University of California, Davis have built what they describe as the world's first chip with 1,000 processors, as well as creating a design that overcomes power constraints common to multi-cores. The chip, which was unveiled last week, is capable of performing 1.78 trillion instructions per second and contains 621 million transistors, according to the university.  In 2010, researchers at the University of Glasgow and the University of Massachusetts Lowell produced a 1,000-core computer processor but that design was based on a field programmable gate array. An FPGA is a chip whose core logic is reconfigurable using software. Also that year, Intel produced a...
